Rainier Olympic Nurses Association is bringing the Picture of Nursing: The Zwerdling Postcard Collection to the WSNA Convention May 17th to 19th at the Greater Tacoma Convention Center.
“The National Library of Medicine produced Pictures of Nursing: The Zwerdling Postcard Collection, guest curated by historian and educator Julia Hallam, PhD (University of Liverpool). The traveling exhibition and companion website present a selection of postcards that span a century of images of nursing and nurses and investigates the hold these images exert on the public imagination—then and now. The nursing imagery is informed by cultural values; ideas about women, men, and work; and by attitudes toward class, race, and national differences.”
“The Postcard is a fleeting art form influenced by popular ideas and fashions in visual style. Nurses and nursing
have been frequent subjects for over one hundred years. In fact, no other art form has illustrated the nursing profession so profusely and in such variety. These images of nurses and nursing are informed by cultural values; ideas about women, men, and work; and by attitudes toward class, race, and national differences. Pictures of Nursing investigates the hold these images exert on the public imagination — then and now.”
All nurses attending the convention will have ample opportunities to visit the exhibit. For nurses, nursing students and the public who are not attending convention, the collection will be open to the public on Friday, May 19th 1-2pm.
