Book Club for Nurses – The Spirit Catches You

Join Rainier Olympic Nurses Association for a book discussion.

Book: The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong child, Her American Doctors, and the Collison of Two Cultures by Anne Fadiman

“The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down explores the clash between a small county hospital in California and a refugee family from Laos over the care of Lia Lee, a Hmong child diagnosed with severe epilepsy.

Lia’s parents and her doctors both wanted what was best for Lia, but the lack of understanding between them led to tragedy. Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Current Interest, and the Salon Book Award, Anne Fadiman’s compassionate account of this cultural impasse is literary journalism at its finest.”

Open to all RNs, LPNs and nursing students. The first 20 R.O.N.A. members who register will receive a copy of the book due to the sponsorship of California Casualty. Nurses who attend and complete an evaluation form will receive a certificate of attendance that meets the continuing competency requirement for license renewal in Washington State.

COVID Protocols – This event will be held in person at our new office. We will be limiting attendance to allow for social distancing. We ask that all attendees are vaccinated and wear a mask. KN95 masks will be available at the office.
