American Delivery: Screening & Facilitated Discussion
Black women in the U.S. experience maternal mortality at more than three times the rate of White women — a disparity that has persisted, largely unchanged, across recent years of national data. This free educational event is designed to help nurses, nursing students and community members recognize and address the structural factors and implicit bias behind that gap.
Join Rainier Olympic Nurses Association, the Ebony Nurses Association of Tacoma, and Tacoma Community College Nursing Program for a screening of American Delivery: Solving the Maternal Mortality Crisis in U.S. Healthcare, followed by a facilitated discussion connecting the film to current research on health equity in nursing practice.

Discussion Facilitator
Denise Mills, MN, RN
Denise Mills is a transformative nursing leader with more than 20 years of experience spanning critical care, perioperative services, and community‑driven professional development. As the former Director of Perianesthesia at St. Joseph Medical Center, she led high‑acuity recovery teams and advanced patient‑centered, culturally responsive care across surgical services.
A former ICU nurse and dedicated mentor, Denise has spent her career opening doors for the next generation of healthcare professionals. Her work is rooted in equity, expanding access, strengthening opportunity, and dismantling barriers for individuals from historically marginalized communities pursuing careers in healthcare.
As President of the Ebony Nurses Association of Tacoma, she champions initiatives that uplift Black nursing students, build meaningful mentorship pathways, and confront systemic inequities that contribute to healthcare disparities nationwide. Known for her collaborative leadership style, operational expertise, and passion for equitable healthcare, Denise brings a thoughtful, empowering presence to every space she enters.

- Attend the entire activity, missing no more than 15 minutes of the event, and
- Complete the evaluation form
This activity has been submitted to the Oregon Nurses Association for approval to award contact hours. Oregon Nurses Association is accredited as an approver of nursing continuing education professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
